Sash Window

A sash window, also known as a hung sash window, is made up of one or more movable panels, or “sashes.”

History of Sash Windows

The origins of the vertical sliding sash window are still unknown, however it appears that the design was influenced by the more simpler horizontal sliding sash known as the ‘Yorkshire Sash.’

For many years, it was thought that the vertical design originated in Holland in the late 17th century; nevertheless, in Holland throughout the eighteenth century, they were sometimes referred to as the English window.
Others said it was French in origin, as the word “sash” is derived from the French word “chassis,” which means “framing.”
The French sash, on the other hand, had not yet achieved counter-balancing, therefore the sliding sash frame was held in place by a swivel block.

How do Sash Windows Work

Sash windows do not operate on hinges.
A conventional ‘sliding sash’ window is typically composed of two sashes that glide up and down (or side to side), one in front and one behind, in vertical grooves and are counterbalanced by lead weights on ropes.
Sliding sash windows can be opened from the top, bottom, or both.
They have no outward swing traditionally, but new designs tilt in and out for simple cleaning.

Difference Between Double Hung & Single Hung & Venetian Sash

Sash windows can be either double or single hung.
Double-hung sash windows have two operable sashes (the moving portions of the window).

Single-hung sash windows, on the other hand, allow only one sash to be adjusted.
The lower sash of most single-hung windows is operable, whereas the upper sash is fixed.

Venetian sash windows were the standard design for terraced houses erected in the early 1900s, and heritage listed properties in Surry Hills and Newtown typically feature this design.
The weights that balance the central sash are positioned in the outer two boxes, allowing for smooth movement while keeping the central mullions between the portions thin

What Do Sash Windows Cost?

Aluminium and composite window frames are typically less expensive than wood-framed windows. This cost will vary depending on the size of the unit, as well as any additional features and glass upgrades such as laminated or double glazing will also add to the cost.

The average prices below do not factor in glass upgrades and installation costs which are extra.
